Matt 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise (or Glorify) your Father in heaven.

Emphatic You and you alone!

There are at least 9 lights described in Scripture:

God created light – Gen 1:3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Miraculous Light – Ex 10:23 No one could see anyone else or leave his place for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.

Ex 13:21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light,

The word of God is light: Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

God is Light – 1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light;

Jesus is the light of the world. John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world.”

John the Baptist gave off light – John 5:35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

Your eye is light – Matt 6:22a “The eye is the lamp (light) of the body.

Your spiritual armor is light – Rom 13:12b So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

The True Colors of Christians…What color best represents you?

Red  –  These Christians are on fire for Jesus, they have a strong commitment to Jesus Christ and everyone knows it.

Orange – Moving towards full commitment towards Jesus Christ, misunderstood in some circles of people to be really on fire for Jesus.

Yellow – Afraid of full commitment, but they still are closer to Jesus than they are to the world.

Green – Young in their faith, growing towards a commitment to following Jesus with all their heart. This has nothing to do with age of person.

Blue – This is the largest group of Christians. Just as blue is the most common color in the world… sky, water. This is a common Christian, sky high one day and low in the depths of the sea on others. They are not stable in their faith or commitment to Jesus Christ.

Indigo – Just as the color is the hardest to see, these Christians are the hardest to find. They blend into the world around them and their commitment to Jesus Christ is hardly ever seen.

Violet – These Christians are only committed to the image of being a Christian. Just as this color represents beauty, These Christians are committed to an outward appearance, but no inward commitment to Jesus Christ at all.

Notice only one category is actually on FIRE for Jesus / 14% that’s the reality in most churches

Purpose – To Help the people understand they are the Royal Priesthood to the world for Jesus Christ.

A Royal Interceptor – A Royal Priesthood

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

As a Royal (Interceptor) priesthood…

I. Last week we discussed that God has chosen you to be His sons You are Heirs

Vv. 9a.  But you are a chosen people

John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last.

As a Royal Interceptor…

II. You are a Royal Priest

Vv. 9b. a royal priesthood

1 Peter 2:9

The expression appears to be taken from Ex 19:6 – “And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests”

Not an individual but a collective group or that they constituted, as it were, an entire nation or kingdom of priests.

Isa 61:6: “But ye shall be named priests of the Lord; men shall call ye ministers of our God.”

A. History of the Priest

1. Priest began with Aaron

2. Priest ended with Melchizedek

3. Priestly order began again with Jesus

B. What is the Role of a Priest?

The Role of a Priest is …

1. God’s Representation of His Love

Eph 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

ILL. Love chapter / time to grow up!

1 Cor 13:4-7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

NIV And then he makes a very unusual statement When I was a child…

The Role of a Priest is …

2. Interceed through Prayer for others interceptor

We are to have “boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19).”

“we have access by one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:18).”

James 5:16

16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective

Ill. A youth rally I recommitted my life come and pray

The Role of a Priest is …

3. Offer up sacrifices to God

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service / worship (Romans 12:1).”

Ill. Call Lynn at 11:35

The Role of a Priest is …

4.  Minister to God’s people

Isa 61:6: “But ye shall be named priests of the Lord; men shall call ye ministers of our God.”

2 Cor 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant-

Rom 15:15 I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Ill. A minister has a huge job – teach God’s Word, train disciples to do God’s Word, use your gifts to serve others,

You are chosen to be priest in order to be imitators of Jesus Christ by

1. representing God’s love to the world.

2. praying for others, as a

3. living sacrifice, so that you may

4. minister to others through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Rick Warren in his book “The Purpose Driven Life,” states, “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by His purpose and for His purpose.”
